DIE 4. REVOLUTION - ENERGY AUTONOMY

haben in Vorführungen und TV-Ausstrahlungen in über 30 Ländern in 26 Sprachen bisher über 7 Millionen Menschen gesehen.

In Hunderten von Veranstaltungen in der ganzen Welt - von Beirut bis Irkutsk, von Berlin bis Fukushima - diskutierten TeilnehmerInnen vielfach auch unter Anwesenheit des Regisseurs Carl - A. Fechner die mitreißende Message des Films: die 100-prozentige Umstellung der Welt auf ein dezentrales, gerechtes System der Energieversorgung aus Erneuerbaren Ressourcen ist möglich, - und zwar schon bis zum Jahr 2030. Eine DVD Fassung in 8 Sprachen steht aktuell zur Verfügung.

Aber es gibt keinen Zweifel: die Energiewende ist in Gefahr. Weltweit erleben wir einen Rollback zu verkrusteten, zentralisierten Strukturen. Schon werden wieder Atomkraftwerke gebaut, auf 67 Baustellen auf der ganzen Welt.
Selbst in Japan haben Lobbyisten des fossilen, nuklearen Systems wieder das Sagen.

Unter dem Eindruck dieser bedrohlichen Entwicklung und mit großzügiger Unterstützung der Wavecon-Stiftung hat sich das Team um Carl-A. Fechner jetzt zu einer völligen Internet-Freigabe der deutschen Fassung des Films entschlossen und damit ein jahrelanges Versprechen eingelöst.

ZuschauerInnen können zudem mit einer Spende auf freiwilliger Basis die weitere Verbreitung des Films voranbringen. Der Clou: von jedem Euro, der gespendet wird, gehen 50 Cent direkt an die Schüler-Initiative "Plant for the Planet". In Tausenden von Schülerakademien aktiviert diese einmalige Initiative eine ungezählte Anzahl von Kindern und Jugendlichen überall in der Welt Bäume zu pflanzen. Mehr als 10 Milliarden Bäume haben sie auf diese Weise der Erde geschenkt, - eine Billion Bäume sollen es in den nächsten 10 Jahren werden. Ein messbarer Beitrag zur CO2 Reduktion.

Das Team von fechnerMEDIA freut sich sehr, die Initiative Plant for the Planet unterstützen zu können und dankt insbesondere dem Gründer der Wavecon Stiftung, Cemil Degirmenci, für sein beharrliches Engagement und die finanzielle und technische Unterstützung, ohne die dieses Streaming-Projekt nie zustandegekommen wäre.

Regisseur Carl-A. Fechner ist sehr gespannt auf die Resonanz: "Wir bieten nun Millionen von Menschen, die den Film DIE 4. Ireland, Cloughjordan. A fascinating place and the location of the first and only eco-village in Ireland. The founder is Gregg Allen, a man who began working in a grocers before embarking on this ambitious project. With his organization SPIL he bought the land to develop the idea, but had to wait until 2005 to get planning permission agreed. The guidelines were stringent and there were 36 separate conditions to meet before even beginning – not an easy task to fulfill. Nonetheless, the process did finally get over all the barriers – 50 families now live there and there is space in total for 130 homes.

Our focus in this shoot is on „near zero energy buildings“. It is, however, important to define this more exactly since in Cloughjordan, we’re rather facing “near zero emission buildings“. The raw definition is that a zero energy building should produce as much energy per year as it uses. An alternative definition says that it should produce as much energy per year as the whole primary energy demand was, including the energy required to build it in the first place. Nearly zero emission buildings for their part should at least produce as much carbon free, renewable energy as they use carbon producing energies.

On our shoot, we have already discovered a lot of new and energy-efficient features, techniques and innovations to make buildings and the urban environment more sustainable. But why would people use them? Why would they be interested in other forms of energy production and energy-efficiency, if they’ve never heard about problems associated with conventional energy? Why would they support retrofitting, if they have no idea about the advantages? Why would they use natural ventilation if they have always used air-conditioners? In Vitoria-Gasteiz we learned more about the importance and some methods of raising social awareness concerning sustainability.

Alberto Ortiz de Elgea and Xabier Marrero, who are in charge of the local urban CONCERTO-project “PIME’S” being built in Vitoria-Gasteiz at the moment, are also facing those questions and are looking at different ways of raising social awareness for sustainable living and sustainability in general. As Green City of the Year 2012, Vitoria-Gasteiz has definitely got some ideas to put forward…

Therefore a central innovation has been built on the site: a poly-generating plant which produces electricity, heating and even cooling at the same time. Unlike conventional power plants, which only produce electricity, the residual heat from the generator is not wasted but is rather collected, in order to be used to heat – or to cool.

"In Lyon, our shoot topic was „impact“. But what exactly does that mean? It concerns the question of what CONCERTO initiated and is encouraging to do in the future. The focus was on the innovative technology they used in constructions in France.

The quartier La Confluence in Lyon is one of the most ambitious city centre urban regeneration projects in Europe. On this 150 hectare site, a new eco-district with 670 new apartments and 15.400 square metres of office space has been built. The aim is to develop the former industrial site into a sustainable and energy efficient district and to reduce energy needs by 40%.

An extremely ambitious task, yet a challenge. To reach the target energy savings, they built bio-climatic buildings, cladded with external insulation and with double flow ventilation.  80% of the energy is renewable, and includes solar energy, biomass – a wood co-generation heating system – solar panels for hot water and photovoltaic panels for electricity.  Intelligent design concepts allow for maximising natural light and sun protection, whilst standby power interruption switches, energy efficient light bulbs and occupancy sensors are used throughout all communal areas. They are expecting savings of 40 – 50 kilowatts, per square meter, per year. What did strike me as interesting is that they had not included the energy use of computers and fridges in their calculations…"

In Grenoble ging es um die Planung von CONCERTO-Projekten:

"The CONCERTO-site in Grenoble is a whole eco-district, almost like a little future-town in middle of the town. This vast area must be carefully planned over the course of many years work… which is the main topic of our shoot here. The quartier de Bonne in Grenoble is one of the first eco-districts in France. Spread over eight hectares, the site contains virtually all the components that would be needed in a town: dwellings and office buildings, a supermarket, a cinema, but also a school, a student residence and a home for elderly people.

The planning of a project such as this is the most important part, since it creates the blueprint for all
further action and development. It requires the cooperation of a lot of different people, such as

Die Crew auf der Terrasse und am Fuße des Plus-Energie-Hauses im Quartier De Bonne in Grenoble

The Faluház building in Budapest fascinated me, not least because it is so huge. Made up of 886 flats, it is the largest high-rise residential building in Hungary. It’s also a lot more colourful than the buildings surrounding it.

As a part of the retrofitting it underwent, the Faluház was transformed into dazzling blue, green and white. Zsuzsanna Nagy, one of the building’s tenants, tells us that the colours represent those of the grapes which are grown in the vineyards nearby. She also explains that 10 cm thick expanded polystyrene has been used to cover the whole house, dramatically increasing insulation. Rock wool has been embedded above the windows to comply with fire prevention standards. And the retrofitting has already delivered economic benefits: „Since January, I do not need to heat anymore!“ says Ms. Nagy.

The insulation leads to significantly less energy consumption and around 40% are actually saved on electricity bills as well. Zsuzsanna and all the other tenants had to make financial contributions to the retrofitting, but the investments make sense.

This will not only help to reach the EU 2020 goals of reducing carbon emissions, but retrofitting also vastly reduces heating demands. In addition, solar energy is harnessed on the rooftops, delivering heat from the sun. Ms. Nagy is delighted. Not only is the building recognised as being the biggest high-rise building in Hungary, but it also holds the prize of having the largest solar generating plant in Hungary, along with energy efficiency standards that are second to none.

This is an unprecedented success, as I learn from a passer-by. According to her, the investment in retrofitting is more than compensated for in the long run, given energy prices which are high in Hungary.

Our next stop is Grenoble, some 1,300 km away from Budapest. The topic we’ll be reporting on there, will be "planning".

Beim ersten Dreh im verschneiten Salzburg ging es um das District Heating Sytem im Stadtteil Lehen. Diese gemeinsame Lösung spart noch mehr Energie als kleinere Systeme und kann so die CO2-Emissionen bis zu 90% verringern!
